About this estimate
This is an estimate for private vehicles, not a payment or an official bill. First-year proration, multi-year arrears, advance-payment discounts and special exemptions are not calculated. Confirm the final amount and payment deadline with your transport office.
Your renewal date is set from the date the vehicle was registered, not a single date for everyone; the last page of the blue book carries it. Renewal is open for three months from that date.
The province charges two separate penalties: a percentage on the tax and, once a whole fiscal year has passed, a surcharge on the renewal fee as well. The windows below run from the end of the three-month renewal period.
Private two-wheelers: scooters, motorcycles and quad bikes.
Schedule notes
- Vehicles more than 15 years old pay an extra 5% for each year beyond 14, capped so the total cannot exceed double the base rate. The estimate does not apply it.
- A newly registered vehicle is taxed proportionally for its first year, counted from the month it cleared customs.
- Ambulances, fire engines and hearses pay no vehicle tax, and neither do small scooters adapted for disabled riders.
- Private owners may pay up to five years at once.
Rates are taken from the Bagmati Province Finance Act 2083 (Schedule 2), which commenced on 17 July 2026, and the penalty ladders from the Province Vehicle and Transport Management Act 2075 (sections 35 and 176). Verified against the gazetted act on 2026-08-22: every band in this file was read from the PDF, not from a summary. All 22 bands match Bagmati Province Finance Act 2083 (gazette 2083/03/31), fetched from giwmscdnone.gov.np. Provincial source

What the amount depends on
- The province: each sets its own vehicle tax in its own annual finance act, so the same vehicle can owe different amounts in different provinces
- The kind of vehicle and its engine capacity in cc: a bigger engine pays more
- For an electric vehicle, motor power or first-registration value, depending on the province
- Whether it is private or public: public vehicles are taxed differently
When and where you pay
- With the bluebook renewal, by the due date on the last page of the bluebook.
- At a transport management office that handles vehicle tax, or online through an official channel where your province accepts it.
- Third-party insurance is separate: it is bought from an insurer, and it has to be valid before the tax can be paid.
Paying late
Once the window after the due date has passed, a late fee is added on top of the tax, and it grows the longer you wait. Left for years, the registration can be cancelled.
Common questions
- Is vehicle tax the same everywhere in Nepal?
- No. Each province sets its own in its annual finance act, so the amount depends on where the vehicle is registered as well as what it is.
- Do electric vehicles pay vehicle tax?
- Most do. The province may use motor power or first-registration value, and some bands or vehicle types are exempt.
- Can I pay vehicle tax online?
- Where your province accepts it, through official channels such as the Nagarik App, once valid insurance is on record. Your transport office can tell you.
- What if I pay late?
- A late fee is added on top of the tax, and it grows the longer you wait. Left for years, the registration can be cancelled.
